Wonder and Nostalgia With Mixed Media Artist Duncan Wright

Mixed media artist Duncan Wright layers images in a way that yields more of an assemblage than a collage. Nothing feels like it’s been cut and pasted, rather the symbols and images melt together to create a holistic atmosphere.

In the paintings featured here, the atmosphere is greater than the sum of its parts; the individual components fall away in a thrust of light and colour.

Several of Wright’s artworks show the same images. A buck, a bee, a crow, the same languid flowers. However, despite this repetition I don’t feel the need to decode these symbols or take them as icons.

In the same way that our brains remember fragmented images, Wright’s symbols are recycled, layered, and reinscribed in a way that evokes memory, wonder, and nostalgia.
