Richard was born in Leicester in 1976 and attended the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire from 1997 – 1999 where he graduated with a BA (hons) in Fine Art.
He later attended the Art School at De Montfort University from 2002 – 2004 where he gained his MA in Fine Art. Since graduating Richard has worked as a successful Fine Artist as well as an art lecturer and adult education tutor. His work continues to be exhibited and sold internationally.
Richards work explores the natural and sometimes urban environment, be that through landscape or more detailed close-up work. He often looks for simple and subtle things that catch his eye, such as the way beams of light enhance certain colours in part of a scene or how the textures of objects are in contrast to their surroundings. He also explores the mundane little things that people often don’t notice and works at finding balance and harmony in his subjects.
As his artwork develops it often takes on its own abstract personality separate from the original subject. Although he is trying to capture the subject, he allows the painting to develop instinctively through intuitive and emotional response.
This assists him in creating visual balance whilst also allowing him to explore the properties of the oil paint. The finished artwork is often evocative because of this process.
